Lynn Schulman for City Council

I am a friend and strong supporter of Lynn Schulman who is a progressive Democratic Party activist, Community Board 6 Vice Chair and experienced non-profit executive who is running for City Council in the 29th District in Queens. The 29th District covers the areas of Forest Hills, Rego Park, Kew Gardens and parts of Richmond Hill and Maspeth.

Lynn has repeatedly impressed me with her knowledge of economic, health care, education, transportation and affordability issues facing those of us who live in the 29th City Council District. She also has managed to impress numerous Unions, non-profits and good government groups and enjoys the endorsements of the New York Times, The Citizen's Union of the City of New York, Former Mayor Ed Koch, 1199 SEIU, Tenants PAC, Transit Workers Union, Local 100, The NYPD Detectives Endowment Association and many others.

The following sites contain more information about Lynn Schulman, her plans and her experience.

What are you doing for the next 72 hours

Right now my family and I are in Philadephia. We canvassed 106 homes today and we will be back out in the suburbs south of Philly tomorrow. Tuesday I am taking off from work and driving back down to Philly to work on getting out the vote on election day. I do not want to wake up Wednesday morning wondering what more I could have done to avoid an Obama loss.

I know you have work, or schools, or kids to watch, but find an hour or two somewhere. If you live in or near a battleground state they need you on the ground right now!. If you can't get to a battleground state physically then you can make calls from your living room to voters in those states to get the vote out. Go to http://my.barackobama.com and create a profile and sign up for one of the neighbor-to-neighbor calling campaigns.

Now back to the issues for a second. Taxes and Socialism. The rubish that has been sprouted by McCain/Palin really needs to be put in its place. They charge that Obama's plan is socialism. They point to 40% [an inaccurate figure] of people who do not pay income taxes but will receive an increased tax credit under Obama's plan. That 40% they talk about actually pay taxes everyday: payroll taxes, sales taxes, taxes on their mortgages, etc. The earned income tax credit -- which is what we are talking about -- was started by no one less than Ronald Regan. Look it up. Increasing the credit - a credit that goes to working Americans who earn low salaries but contribute everyday to our economy and local tax base - is an important step to maintain our economic vitality. This socialism rubish is a cheap shot. We have had a progressive tax scheme since Teddy Roosevelt [another Republican] created it almost 100 years ago. Nothing has changed except for some cheap simplistic rhetoric.

I am at a complete loss why anyone would support McCain's tax program. First 95% of us will get no break. not only that but he will tax our health benefits. So if you earn less than $200,000 if an individual or $250,000 as a couple and you receive health benefits through your employer, MCCAIN WILL TAX YOU MORE! Think about that. If you make less than that threshold then why are you supporting McCain? And if you are making more than that threshold, then how about putting Country First? Even then Obama will only increase taxes by 3% on the top 5% of wage earners, and even then the extra 3% will only apply to that part of income in excess of $250,000. Please, enough of the lies and the simplistic rhetoric. Get off these blogs and research it yourself and see that McCain/Palin are offering a false choice.

Remember, think ahead to Wednesday morning. If he looses, do you want to feel you could have done more? Act now.

Shameful Politics

I am truly dissapointed and saddened that John McCain, someone I once had great respect for and could even contemplate voting for some years ago, has resorted to truly base and undignified campaign tactics. I speak of course of the slanderous attack that Obama "pals around" with terrorists. Barack was eight years old when Ayers was founding the Weather Underground. The same New York Times article the McCain campaign cites to goes on to debunk this claim that there is any real association between Obama and Ayers -- as have several other investigations [except for those of the radical right of course]. This cheap shot is reminiscent of the McCarthy era witch hunts, where guilt by association was an acceptable standard for conviction. The John McCain of Hanoi and of his early senate career has abandoned us. In his place is a cynical, win at any cost politician whose tactics will cost him his dignity and the dignity of this country. Remember, Country First! Do not let him represent us to the world.

As for why he has done this; it is obvious that his campaign has become so desparate that they have no where else to go but into the mud. McCain seeks to change the topic away from issues and policies that of real meaning to most American, and direct it instead to innuendo, gossip and out right lies. Don't let him. Read and watch the following and share with your friends.

Obama for America
Last month, 159,000 Americans jobs were lost. It's no surprise that the top priority for a majority of voters is the economy.

But the McCain campaign doesn't share those concerns, admitting yesterday that "There's no question we want to change the subject here," and that they're "looking forward to turning the page on the financial crisis."

McCain has laid his cards on the table. And to everyone tired of the politics of past, this latest announcement is as disheartening as it is disturbing.

It's up to you to keep this election on track.
Watch our latest web video showing just how disastrous the Bush-McCain economic policies have been, then share it with your friends:

John McCain can't connect with the anxiety Americans feel about everyday things like buying groceries or paying for health insurance. He's out of touch, and his own policies and track record have him cornered.

As more and more people look to Barack Obama's steady leadership for the solutions we need to protect the middle class, McCain's attacks will become more toxic and destructive.

John McCain is desperate, and he'll do anything to distract voters and smear Barack's character.

But when McCain clouds the issues with gimmicks and despicable tactics, your voice will help steer this race back on track.

You can spread the truth about Barack Obama's plans for the change we need. Watch the video and share it with your friends:

VP Debate and 477 Tax Increases

I am at a bit of a loss at how anyone could see that debate as a tie let alone as a win in any sense for Palin. On foreign matters, she flat out didn't know what she was talking about. On domestic economics things were not much better, and she largely avoided answering any substantive questions choosing instead on multiple occassions to return to her taxes talking point, that had obviously been prepared and rehearsed extensively before hand. Come off it! Why on earth would we want this woman, at this time - given the state of the economy and our troops fighting wars abroad - to be a heart-beat away from the Presidency and to be an advisor to McCain????

And with respect to her tax claims, check out this message and video that once again lays bare the amazing hypocrisy of the "Maverick" McCain:

Obama for America
John McCain was at it again today, releasing yet another ad full of lies about Barack Obama and taxes.

The McCain campaign is using a manipulative, dishonest method to calculate how many times Barack has voted to raise taxes, and they came up with the number 94 -- completely unsupported by any independent analysis of the record.

So we turned it around and used the McCain campaign's bogus counting method on his record. And guess what?

Using his own standards, John McCain has voted 477 times to raise taxes!

Our team put together a fun video to help you and your friends see just how desperate John McCain looks when he runs the same tired attacks Republicans have used for years.

Check out the video and share it with your friends:

A report out today shows that McCain has almost completely stopped running positive ads and is focusing virtually his entire advertising budget on attacking Barack.

More of these attacks will come, but with your help we can make sure they don't gain traction.

Bailout Fallout

Monday, the economic bailout plan failed to pass a vote in Congress, and the Dow Jones had its biggest single-day drop in two decades. As soon as that happened, McCain rushed to say we shouldn't point fingers -- and then in almost the same breath, he blamed Barack. Tuesday, the Republican Party followed McCain's lead and launched a $5 million ad campaign attacking Barack and the bailout plan. The bottom line is that with families hurting and banks failing, we need to start helping families and the middle class.

While John McCain is figuring out who else to blame, Barack released a new two-minute ad today outlining an economic plan that will put people like you first.Watch the ad and make sure everyone you know sees Barack's plan to get us out of this crisis:

http://my.barackobama.com/baracksplan

Barack Obama has consistently called for a solution based on a core set of principles that will address our problems and put middle-class Americans first. He has proven he's a leader who will stay calm and steady during times of crisis. We cannot solve our economic problems by taking the same path of the last eight years.

Explain this one to me...

I wish I could take credit for the following, but credit is due to "nitwashing" of the Yahoo Group ObamaBrigade. I had to post it though as it really highlights the hypocrisy and ridiculousness of the McCain/Palin candidacy.

*****
I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight.... .
  • If you grow up in Hawaii , raised by your grandparents, you're"exotic, different."
  • Grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers, a quintessential American story.

  • If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
  • Name your kids Willow , Trig and Track, you're a maverick.

  • Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
  • Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.

  • If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.
  • If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.

  • If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising two beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.
  • If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.

  • If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.
  • If , while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.

  • If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America 's.
  • If you're husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now.
