Fahrenheit 451

The Boston Herald and other news sources are reporting that as mayor of Wasilla, Gov. Palin confronted the town Librarian on several occasions and asked her if she would be willing to pull certain books off the shelves if the need arose. The Librarian said the books in the Library were based on national standards for a library of that size and that she had severe problems with any type of censorship. Shortly thereafter, the then Mayor fired the Librarian.

The more we learn, the scarier the prospect of Gov. Palin being a heartbeat away from the Presidency becomes.
  • She apparently is comfortable with the idea that it might be necessary to censor what books can be accessed by citizens. Unless we are talking about porn, it is never acceptable. The First Amendment guarantees this;
  • She is open to the idea of teaching creationism in our public schools [again, so much for the First Amendment];
  • Funding for the "Bridge to Nowhere" was actually pulled by Congress before Palin was elected governor and she actually voiced support for the project during her campaign for Governor; and,
  • That Jet she had put on E-bay. Well she did put it on E-bay, but it didn't sell there. It eventually was sold at a loss by an aircraft broker.

The Republicans are using smoke and mirrors -- empty rhetoric and simplistic arguments -- to disguise their failures and their hypocrisy. They are very good at inflaming people's passions and getting people to vote on those passions rather than slowing down and seeing what is really going on. If you have never read it, pick up a copy of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. It is a relatively short novel, but the parallels between the future society discussed in that book and today are truly frightening. The Republican political machine somes times feels like it has taken a page or two right out of that book.

If you want to talk about Fahrenheit 451, look no further than Hussein Obama's "Truth Squads."

Censorship must be okay, when a dimocrat does it, right?

"Truth Squad's?" If you are referring to efforts to fight complete falsehoods, which I have participated in, how can you possibly consider that censorship? Censorship does not include correcting lies and falsehoods. For instance, as your instance on invoking his middle name suggests, there has been a concerted effort to portray Barack, a life-long Christian as a Muslim. Now I couldn't care less what his religion is, but an obvious effort is being made to try and label him as a muslim and thereby invoke the connection between muslims and islamic terrorists. Its false, a lie; if he wasn't running for President and so much in the public eye he could sue for slander and defamation. The president of my wife's Jewish congregation actually came up to my sister-in-law the other day and said she was concerned about Barack because he was really a muslim and had plans to kill jews. Insanity! There is no truth behind that at all. But like a snowball rolling down-hill this lie has developed a following.

People have the right to defend themselves from lies Mr. Heck. They do not, however, have a right to remove books from the shelves, or order official government reports to be edited because they don't care for the truth. Your snide comment is disappointing, but not unexpected.
